December 31st 1999LONDON GOES GLOBAL ON "MILLENNIUM NIGHT"Wealth Warning: The millennium officially begins 1 January 2001
London's Millennium night will be an exciting mixture of spectacular effects and on-going entertainment and fun throughout the day and night. At the core will be a global village celebrating the arrival of the Millennium at different times around the world with our own communities. This is an event for all Londoners and there will be something for everyone to enjoy in safety. The global village will be north and south of the river between Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges. On the Thames itself there will be a spectacular River of Fire at the Millennium Moment, from Tower Bridge to Vauxhall Bridge. An amazing pyrotechnic display just after midnight will also make this a night to remember. Fun for all the family will be on offer at fairground sites in the area. There will be a wide variety of rides ranging from modern high-tech to traditional including steam-driven carousels and Big Wheels. The fairground sites will be open all Millennium weekend for this one special occasion. This is only the start; more events will be announced in the autumn. The proposed timetable for the core event is:
The Millennium River Event, known as Big Time, is the official London celebration, partially funded by a grant from the Millennium Commission, with the New Millennium Experience Company holding a watching brief, and Pacesetter the appointed production house. The management group is chaired by Michael Lockett with Harvey Goldsmith as a key advisor. Tim Spencer of Pacesetter is responsible for delivery of the event. Core funding is provided by a grant of UKP1.8 million (USD 2.7 million) from the Millennium Commission through the Millennium Festival Fund Fund - London is one of 22 cities in the UK receiving this funding. Other funding is currently being sought, or is under negotiation, from a variety of private and public sector sources. Minister for London Nick Raynsford chairs a Steering Committee for the event to co-ordinate the involvement of all interested parties, including emergency services, local authorities, transport organisations, broadcasters and other key London bodies. |
