Government of Canada

On September 23, 1997, the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, delivered the Throne Speech to open the 36th Parliament of Canada on September 23, 1997. Here is an extract of the speech dealing with the millennium.

Canadian Organisations

There are a number of organisations based in Canada operating both Canadian and global projects.

The Millennium Council of Canada represents and promotes initiatives aimed at realising the positive opportunities presented by the Year 2000 and the beginning of the New Millennium.

The Millennium Bureau of Canada has a site that permits a voice for Canadians to present activities in their region that revolve around the millennium from special projects down to the party in the town hall. All are welcome to submit events and most all of them are posted in a searchable database.

Canadian Headquarters for Scout Millennium Celebrations 2000: North-western Ontario Region and the UK Scout Association are encouraging Scout groups around the world to participate in this International celebration.

THE Millennium Foundation of Canada, home of the Earth Legacy Project and Wills for the Earth.

2000cdn: This is a Canadian based Global events, celebrations, year 2000 initiatives, Y2K and Millennium information, destination and entertainment web site.

Timecapsule 2000

Timecapsule 2000: Canadians from coast to coast to coast are being asked to share their memories and impressions of what this millennium means to them. Almost anything goes ... a poem, song, short story, part of a diary, a cherished photo, grandpa Stan's war medals, Nana Lucille's special quilt, the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement ... something of great historical significance or something that is close to the heart like the first harpoon that one of our students made. If you are new to digital technology, ask for help at your local school or Community Access Centre. People there can likely help you transfer your memories into digital form and send them on to the great folks at , the sponsors of this project. They will collect them and store them in a digital time capsule that we hope will be buried under an inukshuk to be built by Inuit in Ottawa on July 1st in the year 2000. From the Leo Ussak Elementary School in the Canadian Arctic.

See other timecapsules in our Timecapsule 2000 feature.
